What this site collects, which is not much, and what happens to it.
Last updated 18 September 2026
The short version
This is one person writing about a truck. There is no analytics, no advertising network, no tracking pixel and no third party being paid to watch you read. Nothing collected here is sold, rented or handed to anybody for marketing.
You can read every page on this site without giving me anything. The only time I hold anything about you is when you choose to write a review.
What you give me
When you leave a review on a recipe, the form asks for four things and offers a fifth.
- Your name. Published next to your review, exactly as you type it. It does not have to be your real name and nothing checks.
- Your email address. Never published. It is used to send you one confirmation email, so that nobody can put words in your mouth by typing your address into the form, and so I have a way to reach you about what you wrote. It is not added to a mailing list, because there is no mailing list.
- A rating out of five. Counted into the recipe's average once your review is published.
- What you wrote. Published as typed.
- A photograph, if you add one. Published with your review. It is re-encoded the moment it arrives, which strips the metadata your phone writes into it - including, importantly, the GPS coordinates of where it was taken.
Nothing you send goes on the site until I have read it. Until then it is not on the page, not in the recipe's average and not visible to anybody but me.
What the site records on its own
- A hashed version of your IP address, stored against a review you submit. It is put through a keyed one-way hash before it is written down, so what is stored cannot be turned back into your address. It exists so I can see that forty reviews came from one place, and for nothing else.
- Ordinary server logs kept by the company that hosts the site, which record requests in the way every web server has since the 1990s.
- A cookie, only once you submit something, so that coming back later the site knows which review is yours. Someone who only reads is never given one. There is a whole page about the cookies.
Who else sees anything
Three outside parties are involved in getting this site in front of you, and honesty about them is the point of this page.
- Google Fonts. One typeface on this site is loaded from Google's servers, which means your browser asks Google for it and Google can see your IP address and which browser you are using when it does. I am working on serving it from here instead.
- OpenStreetMap. The campsite map loads its tiles from the OpenStreetMap project, which sees the same thing while it sends them. The map only appears on pages that have one.
- The host and the mail service. The company running the server holds the database and the logs. The service that sends the confirmation email handles your address in order to deliver it.
That is the complete list. Nobody else gets anything, and none of the above is given anything for advertising.
How long it is kept
- Published reviews stay up until you ask me to take yours down, or I do.
- Reviews nobody confirmed are abandoned by definition. They are of no use to anyone and get cleared out.
- The cookie expires after about thirteen months, or whenever you clear it.
- The checklist you tick off never leaves your own browser, and clears itself after about six weeks.
What you can ask for
Email me and I will do any of these, for free, without asking why. I will need to be able to tell which review is yours, which usually means writing from the address you used.
- A copy of everything the site holds about you.
- A correction to something you wrote.
- Deletion of your review, your photograph and your address.
Depending on where you live you may have these rights by law - the UK and EU GDPR and the California privacy acts all cover them. You have them here regardless of where you live, because there is no reason to make anybody prove their postcode first.
Children
This site is not aimed at children and I do not knowingly keep anything from anyone under 13. If your child has left a review, email me and it is gone the same day.
Changes
If this changes, the date at the top changes with it. Nothing here is versioned behind your back: the site is a public repository, and every wording change is in its history.
Getting hold of me
Use whichever of the links in the footer reaches me and say what you need.
